Municipality of Yambol

These ancient words still hold true today. Yambol Municipality comprises the city of Yambol which is also the administrative center for Yambol District. It has an area of 91 sq. km. and lies on both banks of the river Tundzha. Yambol is 100 km. far away from Burgas where the nearest airport is situated. The altitude is 114m.
Yambol is one of the oldest cities in Bulgaria and the whole Europe. According to ancient sources it was established by emperor Diocletian in 293 A. D. who named it Diospolis – “the city of Zeus”. It was built next to the ancient Thracian town of Kabyle.
Kabyle arouse as a Thracian settlement to the end of II and in the beginning of I millennium B. C. In the beginning of III century B. C. the time of tsar Spartok ruling the city became a capital of the Thracian state. In the time from III and II century B. C. it was the only town with own coinage in Thrace. The city was destroyed during the campaign of Romans in the year 71 B. C. From the II century B. C. the city is one of the most important Roman military camps in Thrace Province. After adoption of Christianity Kabyle became an Episcopal center. Since 1972 the Kabyle town territory was differentiated as a national archaeological reserve with a museum.
The Bezisten (covered market) is one of the most interesting and well preserved architectural monuments in Bulgaria dating from the second half of 15th century. It gives a specific look of Yambol and is one of the city’s symbols. The Bezisten was restored in 1970-1973 appearance close to the initial and adopted to conditions of modern city. It has exceptional acoustics.
Yambol is an established festival city. Cultural calendar of the municipality is constantly enriched by new national and international initiatives. Yambol has well-developed sports facilities which create conditions for organization of national and international competitions and attraction of training camps for foreign teams.
Yambol disposes with developed accommodation facilities and restaurants industry for tourism. The statistical data shows growth tendency in the number of tourist arrivals in the region.
